A bike that won't fire is frustrating, but almost every no-start traces back to one of three things: fuel, spark, or air/compression. Work through them in order instead of guessing, and you'll usually find the problem in a few minutes.
Start With the Obvious
- Is the fuel petcock on and is there actually gas in the tank?
- Is the kill switch in the run position and the kickstand/clutch interlock satisfied (on EFI bikes)?
- For electric-start bikes, is the battery charged? A weak battery cranks slow and won't fire.
- Is the choke/enrichener set correctly for a cold engine?
It sounds basic, but these account for a huge share of "it won't start" calls.
1. Fuel
Old gas is the number-one killer of carbureted bikes. Fuel that's sat for a few months turns to varnish and clogs the tiny pilot jet. Drain the float bowl (there's usually a screw at the bottom) and check that fresh fuel flows out. If it's dribbling or full of debris, the carb needs a clean.
On EFI bikes, listen for the fuel pump priming when you turn the key on. No buzz means a pump, relay, or fuse problem.
2. Spark
Pull the plug, reconnect the cap, ground the plug body against the head, and crank it. You should see a crisp blue spark. A weak yellow spark or none at all points to a fouled plug, bad cap, or ignition issue. Swap in a known-good plug first — it's the cheapest fix and a very common cause.
3. Air & Compression
A filthy, over-oiled air filter chokes the engine. Pull it and look — if it's caked, clean or replace it. Finally, the engine needs compression to run. If it kicks over with almost no resistance, you may have a tired top end. A compression test confirms it.
Still Dead?
If you've confirmed good fuel, strong spark, clean air and decent compression and it still won't run, the issue is usually deeper — a stuck float, blocked jet, timing problem, or an electrical fault. That's a good point to bring it in rather than chase it blind.
