If your carbureted bike runs great at home but bogs, sputters, or feels flat at a different track, jetting is usually why. Air density changes with altitude, temperature, and humidity — and the carb meters fuel against a fixed assumption about that air.
The Core Idea
Carbs mix fuel with air at a set ratio. Denser air (cold, low elevation, dry) needs more fuel — richer. Thinner air (hot, high elevation, humid) needs less fuel — leaner. When the air changes and the jetting doesn't, the mixture goes off and the bike runs poorly.
The Circuits
- Pilot/idle jet: controls idle and the first bit of throttle. Symptoms here: hard idle, hanging idle, off-idle bog.
- Needle (clip position): controls the midrange, roughly 1/4–3/4 throttle. Raising or lowering the clip leans or richens this zone.
- Main jet: controls wide-open, top-end power.
- Air/fuel screw: fine-tunes the idle mixture.
Reading the Symptoms
- Too rich: bog, blubbering, sputtering, sooty/black plug, lots of smoke, fouling.
- Too lean: hanging idle, popping on deceleration, hesitation, a hot or surging feel, whitish plug. Lean is dangerous — it runs hot and can damage the engine.
Altitude & Temperature Rules of Thumb
Going up in elevation or into hotter weather generally means going leaner on jetting (smaller jets). Coming down to sea level or into cold air means going richer (larger jets). Jetting charts and calculators give a starting point based on your baseline and the new conditions.
Change One Thing at a Time
Read the plug, make a single change, and test. Chasing several variables at once just hides what's actually happening. Note your good baseline settings so you can always get back to a known-good starting point.
