There's no single mileage number for a dirt bike — they don't have odometers and a hard moto works the oil far harder than a trail ride. Think in engine hours and riding intensity, not miles.

A Realistic Guideline

  • 4-stroke MX / racing: every 3–5 hours, or after each race weekend.
  • 4-stroke trail / play riding: every 8–15 hours.
  • 2-stroke transmission oil: every 5–10 hours (it doesn't lubricate the top end, but it shears down fast behind the clutch).

When in doubt, change it more often. Oil is cheap; a rebuild isn't.

Why So Frequent?

Dirt bike engines are small, high-revving, and run hot. A 250F can spin past 13,000 rpm, which shears oil and breaks it down quickly. Many four-strokes also share oil between the engine and clutch, so clutch material and heat contaminate it even faster.

Signs It's Overdue

  • Oil on the dipstick looks dark and gritty instead of amber.
  • Clutch feels grabby or starts slipping.
  • Engine sounds noisier or shifts harder than usual.

Don't Forget the Filter

Change or clean the oil filter at least every other oil change — sooner on a race bike. A clogged filter goes into bypass and pushes unfiltered oil through your engine. And always check your oil level before every ride, not just at change time.
